The contribution of Islam towards world languages is immense. Since the time of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) and his Companions, Islam has played a major role in the development of Arabic language and other major Islamic languages through the process of Islamization.
Islamization of language, as introduced and conceptualized by Tan Sri Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, is a process of introduction of Islamic key concepts into a person’s worldview. This introduction of key concepts, thus transforms the meanings of the person’s outlook of his existence and reality.
The result of the transformation of the person’s mind is apparent on his language – the meanings, terminologies, semantics, styles and traditions. Islamization of language has a major role in uplifting Arabic to become the first Islamic language and establishing a monumental linguistic tradition, which in turn influenced the world linguistics.
The Malay language or known as Bahasa Jāwī (اللغة الجاوية), the term used by the Jāwī scholars, benefited from the Arabic linguistics immensely. Bahasa Jāwī is known by its unique usage of Arabic letters, with several additional invented characters to accommodate Malay consonants and vocals.
As explained by al-Attas, this ingenuity marks the new era of Malay-Islamic civilization. Since the beginning of Bahasa Jawi, Malay intellectual tradition emerged and scholars started to produce thousands of works covering wide range of knowledge such as philosophy, religion, medicine, politics, literature and even family science.
Bahasa Jāwī also became a lingua franca for trade and a became a single language that unites the vast lands and oceans of Malay Archipelago.
The posters were exhibited during the International Symposium on Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas: Philosophical and Civilisational Dimensions on 15th February 2020, at UTM Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, Kuala Lumpur.
