JESUS CHRIST IN THE QURAN

Resource: Hidayah Centre Pamphlet

Discover the Way., The Truth & the Life of Jesus from Authenic Sources.

"This the Truth from your Lord.Do not doubt it."
Quran 3 : 60

Is Jesus...God or Prophet of God?
Divine or Human?
Son of God or Son of Mary?
Imposter or Messiah?
Christian or Muslim?
Crucified? Saviour? Will he return?

THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS CHRIST

Both Christians and Muslims love and honour Jesus Christ. They, however, hold different beliefs about him. In contrast, Jesus is altogether rejected in Judaism.

Who then own the truth about him?
Indeed, the Truth is known only to God the All-Knowing (whose name in the Arabic language is Allah, and Alaha in Aramaic, the language of Jesus).

In His Infinite Mercy, Allah has revealed this Truth in The Quran, the final Revelation to His Final and Universal Prophet, Muhammad (pbuh). The Quran is the only existing authentic Book of God because unlike previous Books it is preserved intact in the original Arabic language, content and form.

JESUS IN THE QURAN

The Qur'an relates Jesus virgin birth, miracles, Gospel and prophetic mission as Messiah to the Israelites. The Qur'an however defends him against the falsehood of being God, Son of God and dying on the cross.

The name of 3 chapter of The Qur'an bear direct reference to Jesus. The 19th Chapter is named "Mary" - the mother of Jesus - who Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said "was the most perfect woman of her time" (Bukhari).
The 3rd Chapter is named "The Family of Imran" who was Mary's  father.
Chapter 5 "The Table" - refer to the table laden with food which the disciples asked Jesus to pray to Allah to send as a miracle.

The selection of verses that follow is the English translation of what Allah says in the Qur'an about Jesus Christ.
Text in Italic is added to explain the context of the verses, and text in red are words spoken by Jesus.

"Relate in The Qur'an the story of Mary"

Mary, Mother of Jesus

The Angel said: "O Mary (Marham), Allah has chosen you and made you pure and truly chosen you above all women. O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord. Prostrate and bow with those who pray."
- Qur'an 3: 42-43

The Angel's Visit

When Mary was alone, We sent to her Our Angel Gabriel, who appeared before her in the form of a man. Alarmed, she said: "May the All-Merciful protect me from you!.
Angel Gabriel said: "I am only a messenger from your Lord, to announce to you the gift of a pious son."
- Qur'an 19: 17-19

The Messiah, Jesus, Son of Mary

Angel Gabriel said: "A word from Allah, a son, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus Christ (Al Masih Isa) son of Mary - honoured in this world and the Hereafter, and among these closest to Allah. He will speak to the people as a baby and a middle-age, and will be of the righteous."
- Qur'an 3: 45-46

A Miraculous Conception

Mary Said: "How will I have a son when no man has touched me nor am I unchaste?"
Angel Gabriel replied: "So it will be, your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for mankind and a mercy from us."
And so it was decreed, she conceived him and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
- Qur'an 19: 20-22

Jesus brought to Mary's family

After Mary had delivered, she returned to her family, carrying baby Jesus. They said: " O Mary! You have done an outrageous thing!"
She merely pointed to baby Jesus. They said: "How can we talk to a baby."
- Qur'an 19: 27-29

First Miracle - Spoke as a baby

Whereupon baby Jesus spoke out:
"Indeed, I am a servant of Allah. He will give me Revelation and make me a Prophet, and has blessed me wherever I may be. Allah enjoins upon me prayer and charity as long as I live, and kindness to my mother, and has

Jesus said: "Worship only Allah, my Lord and your Lord."

A Prophet to the Israelites

Angel Gabriel said: "Allah will make him a Messenger to the Children of Israel (the descendants of Prophet Jacob (Ya'qub), who was also known as Israel)."
- Qur'an 3: 49

The Message of The Gospel

Allah gave Jesus the Gospel (Injeel) and Supported him with the Holy Spirit (Angel Gabriel).
Jesus Said: "I have come to confirmed the Torh (Taurat) of Moses (Musa) which was revealed before me, and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you, and I have brought you a sign from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me. Truly, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship only Him. This is The Right Way."
- Qur'an 2:87 , 3: 50-51

Jesus Miracles

Jesus said: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. 1 fashion for you from clay the shape of a bird, then I breathe into it. and by Allah's permission, it becomes a living bird. And I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and bring the dead back to life, by Allah's permission."
- Qur'an 3:49

Ability to perform miracles does not prove divinity, Allah grants Prophets miracles as a proof of their Prophethood.

Jesus, Prophet of Islam

When Jesus realised that most of the Children of Israel still did not believe, he said: "who will help me in Allah's cause?"

The disciples said: "We are Allah's helpers. We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are Muslims, submitting His Will. Out Lord, we believe in what You have revealed, and we follow Jesus. So record us among those who bear witness to the Truth."
- Qur'an 3: 52-53

Plot to kill Jesus

The disbelievers plotted against Jesus but Allah willed that their plot should fail. And Allah's Will always prevails.

The disbelievers have incurred Allah's wrath because they disbelieved in Jesus, and uttered a terrible slander against Mary, and said boastfully, "We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah."
- Qur'an 4: 156-157

Did Jesus die on the cross?

They did not kill Jesus or crucify him, but it appeared to them that they did. Those who differ about it are full of doubts. They have no certain knowledge but only speculate about waht had happened. They surely did not kill them.
- Qur'an 4:157

Did Jesus rise form the dead?

No! Allah raised Jesus up to Himself. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
Qur'an 4: 158

The Real Jesus

O People of The Book (the Jews, the Christians and others with previously Revealed Books)!
Do not be extreme in your religion or say anything about Allah except the Truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He directed to Mary, and a soul created at a command from Him.

Other Messengers have passed on  before Jesus. And his mother was a woman of Truth. They both ate food, just like other human beings.
- Qur'an 5:75

"Such was Jesus, son of Mary. This is the Truth about him.... But they still dispute over it."
-Qur'an 19:34

"This is the Truth from your Lord, so do not doubt it."
- Qur'an 3:60

Is Jesus "Son of God?"

The Christian say: "The Messiah, Jesus, is the Son of Allah." That is a saying from their own mouths. They imitate the false saying of earlier disbelievers.
It does not befit the Majesty of Allah to beget a son, All-Glorified is He!"
- Qur'an 9:30, 19: 35

** Doctrines such as "son of God" and "God Incarnate" originated from pagan myths of the ancient people of Egypt, Persia,Greece, Rome and others.

Was Adam divide?

Indeed, to Allah, Jesus is like Adam. Allah created Adam from dust, then He said to him :"Be! - and he was.
- Qur'an 3:59

**Miraculous creation is not pfoof of divinity. Adam who was created without either parent was not divine. Jesus, who was created without a father similarly not divide.

Second coming of Jesus

Jesus will be a sign for the End of Time. There is not one of the People of the Book who will not believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Judgement, he will be a witness against them.
-Qur'an 43:61 , 4: 159

Did Jesus claim to be God?

On the Day of Judgement, before Allah, Jesus will answer:
"Glory be to you! I never said what I had no right to say. I told them only what You commanded me: "Worship only Allah, my Lord and your Lord."
- Qur'an 5: 116-117

Do not say, "Three-in-one"

Do not say:"Allah is a Trinity" Stop it! It is better for you. Allah in only One God. Allah is far above the need of having a son. All in the heavens and earth belong to Him.
- Qur'an 4: 171

Say, "One and Only"

Say, "He is Allah, the One and Only God. Allah, the Eternal, the One on whom all depend, while He is independent of all. He begets not nor was He Begotten. An there is none like Him."
- Qur'an 112: 1-4

Vicarious Atonement or Personal Accountability?

Everyone is responsible for his own actions. No one bears the burden (sins) of another.
- Qur'an 6:164

** Sins are not transferred to  inherited by or atorned by someone else. There is no original sin and no vicarious atonement for sins. Allah, the All-Merciful does not demand blood sacrifice. Allah forgives sins through personal atonement, that is, by an individual's sincere repentance, self-reform and making amends.

Who enters Paradise?

The People of the Book claim: "No one shall enter Paradise unless he is a Jew or a Christian. "
These are merely their vain desires.
Say: "Produce you proof, if what you say is true."
Indeed, whoever submits himself totally to Allah (that is, becomes Muslim), while doing good, shall have his reward with his Lord.
- Qur'an 2:111-112

The Good News in Jesus' Gospel

Jesus said: "O Children of Israel! I bring you good news of a Messenger who will come after me, whose name is Ahmad (another name of Prophet Muhammad, meaning "The Praised One")."...The unlettered Prophet, who is described in the Torah and the Gospel.
- Qur'an 61:6, 7:157
