FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND : THE BAJAU

SOURCE: FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

The Bajau are indeed a people who have adapted to life underwater. They are known for being the first people in the world to develop a special adaptation for life in the sea. The people have lived on the sea for over 1000 years, living in temporary stilt houses or on boats scattered across the seas of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Their livelihoods depend entirely on marine resources, as they search underwater for food all day long, especially shrimp, crabs, fish, and octopus.

To compensate for the difference in pressure between the outer ear and the middle ear and to avoid discomfort when diving to great depths, the Bajau have developed an unusual practice: they pierce their eardrums. However, this practice can affect hearing and make them susceptible to ear infections, which is a trade-off they must accept in order to live underwater.

What is particularly remarkable is the fact that the Bajau can dive to depths of up to 60 meters for over 13 minutes. Why can they do that? They have been found to have a significantly larger spleen than normal humans. This larger spleen has the ability to pump more oxygen into the blood and works similarly to a biological diving suit. The spleen of the Bajau is more than 50% larger than that of ordinary people.

What is special is that this trait is not only found among the divers, but also among other members of the tribe, including the children who have never dived before. This means that they have evolved in such a way that they can live more easily underwater.

To sum up, the facts described are true and based on scientific research that demonstrates the unique physiological adaptations of the bajau.
