CONSPIRACY THEORY:
- A hoax that explains a big event with a secret group controlling everything. Unlike urban legends, it has a villain and system.
- Example: The moon landing was fake; the Illuminati controls the music industry.
CREEPY PASTA:
- The Internet version of urban legends. 'Copypasta' = 'copy' + 'paste'. Written specifically to be shared on forums, Reddit, WhatsApp, etc.
CRYPTID LORE:
- Stories about a creature that science doesn't officially recognise, but locals sweat exists.
- Example: Bigfoot, Orang Minyak, Mawas, Yeti, Lochness Monster, etc.
FABLE:
- Animals that talk and act like humans to teach a lesson
- Morality is stated clearly at the end.
- Example: Hikayat Sang Kancil.
FAIRY TALE (DONGENG)
- Clearly fictional, magical, happy ending; no one claims it's true.
- Starts with "Once upon a time / Pada Zaman Dahulu"
- Example: Bawang Putih, Bawang Merah, Cinderella.
FOLKLORE:
- All the beliefs, customs, stories, songs and superstitions passed around informally within a culture. No single author.
- Purpose is to preserve culture and teach how to live.
- Examples: Pantang larang, proverbs, folk songs, Wau Bulan stories, and recipes for rendang passed by mouth.
- If it's passed from person to person without being written in a textbook, it's probably folklore.
HOAX:
- Made to fool you on purpose, for money or attention. The creator knows it's fake.
- Example: Loch Ness monster photo, which was never real.
HORROR
- A genre, not a type of folklore
- Any story – a myth, legend, urban legend, or completely made-up fiction – that is told specifically to scare you.
- Example:
- Mythic horror – Pontianak origin myth
- Legendary Horror – Mahsuri's curse
- Urban legend horror – Flat Pudu toilet ghost, Ghost at Karak Highway.
INTRIGUE:
- This is not supernatural at all. It's human.
- It is a real-world situation full of secrets, plot twists, and hidden motives, where you don't know who to trust. It's the engine of thriller movies and political drama.
- Horror scares you; intrigue makes you suspicious and curious.
- Example: The 1MDB case
LEGENDS:
- Different from myths – it is a story about a human hero that is presented as history but has been exaggerated over time.
- Myth = Gods, Legend = Humans
- Time: historical past, not creation time.
- The character of legends is real-ish humans – warriors, kings, and holy people.
- Truth claims: "This person really lived, and this place really exists."
- Examples:
- Hang Tuah lima bersaudara
- King Arthur
- Legend of Mahsuri at Pulau Langkawi: there is a real tomb, but the curse story is embellished.
MYSTERY / UNSOLVED MYSTERY
- Not a folklore; it's a real event that has no explanation. People try to solve it.
- Example: The missing MH370, the missing Bukit Tabur hiker, the Dyatlov Pass Incident, etc.
MYSTIC / MYSTICISM / MISTIK
- It is about inner experience, not outer event.
- A belief of personal practice that there is a hidden, spiritual reality behind the normal world, and you can connect to it through ritual, meditation and objects.
- If Myth explains the world, Mystic tries to access the hidden world.
- Context of Mystic in Malaysia"
- Ilmu Kebatinan
- Keramat - sacred graves that grant wishes.
- Bomoh / Dukun / Pawang – practitioner who uses mantra and jampi.
- Barang Mistik: Minyak dagu, susuk, keris.
MYTH/MITHOS:
- Mithos is just the original Greek word mythos, meaning story. In English we say 'myth'.
- It is a very old, sacred story that explains how the world began.
- Primordial time - before humans, when gods and giants walked.
- The characters are gods, deities, and creator spirits.
- People used to believe it WAS true and sacred.
- The purpose is to answer big questions – Where is there thunder? Where did humans come from?
- Examples:
- Greek: Zeus creating thunder
- Malay: Hikayat Seri Rama, Puteri Gunung Ledang, Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup.
PARABLE:
- a short, realistic story to teach a religious or moral lesson. No Magic.
- Example: Pak Pandir, stories in religious text.
STRANGE PHENOMENA
- Also called Paranormal, Anomalous Phenomena
- It is a real, observable event that has no current scientific explanation. No moral, no hero, just "weird shit happened".
- The difference with a legend is that a legend tries to explain. A strange phenomenon just is unexplained.
- Examples: UFOs, strange lights over Bukit Tabur, trumpet sounds in the sky, etc.
- Strange phenomena demand investigation.
SUPERNATURAL
- Is the BIGGEST umbrella, bigger than folklore.
- It is the bag for anything that breaks the laws of nature.
- Pontianak, Jin, Malaikat, Toyol, etc...they are supernatural beings.
- Keramat, Abadoned hospital - supernatural places
- Kebal, susuk, pukau, santau, etc.: Supernatural power
- Poltegeist, possession: supernatural events/ haunting
- All the story types can contain supernatural, but not all supernatural is a story.
SUPERSTITION
- Not a full story, but a belief about cause and effect - "If you do X, Y will happen."
- Example: Don't cut nails at night, don't sit on a pillow, don't sweep at night, etc...
URBAN LEGENDS
- The modern cousin of legends.
- A legend that is set in our time, in a city with technology we use.
- The characters are normal people like us, a student, a Grab driver, a nurse, etc.
- The truth claim: "This happened to my friend's friend in KL last month. True Story."
- The purpose is to warn you about modern dangers.
- Example:
- The Karak Highway yellow beetle.
- The vanishing hitchhiker on DUKE Highway.
- Unlike an old legend, an urban legend is meant to be believable right now.
The Master Map
Think of it like this:
FOLKLORE (Umbrella)
- Myth (gods explain the world)
- Legend (human heroes believed as history)
- Urban Legend (modern, friend-of-a-friend)
- Creepypasta (internet urban legend)
- Fairy Tale / Fable / Parable (clearly fiction, teaches lesson)
- Superstition (belief, not story)
NOT folklore, but often confused with it:
- Mystery (real event, unsolved)
- Hoax / Conspiracy (fake, made to deceive)
- Horror (genre / feeling, not origin)
So if you hear, "This is a true story about my cousin," it's an urban legend.
“I read this on a Reddit thread at 3am, and now I can’t sleep." = Creepypasta
“No one can explain what happened” = Mystery
“The government is hiding this” = Conspiracy
Quick way to remember:
- Myth = Why does the world exist?
- Legend: Did this hero really exist?
- Urban Legend = Did this really happen to someone last week?
- Fable = What did the animals teach us?
- Fairy Tale = Magic and happily ever after
- Parable = What is the right thing to do?
- Tall Tale = How big can we make this lie before you laugh?
In one sentence:
A myth tells you why the world was made, a legend tells you why your village is proud, an urban legend tells you why you shouldn't stop on the Karak Highway at 3am, folklore is the bag that holds all three, and horror is what happens when you tell any of them in the dark.
