2000: THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, MALAYSIA

I worked with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia at the IEM Building located in Petaling Jaya from 1999 to 2011. I work as the IEM Secretariat, responsible for conducting courses, seminars, conferences, and so on for IEM members. I have also been responsible for coordinating three technical divisions in IEM, namely the Mechanical Engineering Technical Division, the Building Services Technical Division and the Mineral Engineering Technical Division.
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) is a professional learned society established in 1959. It is one of the largest professional organisations in the country, serving engineering across all disciplines.

Awaiting a meeting

Mechanical Engineering Technical Division monthly meeting.

One of the most memorable experiences was the camaraderie built during our events. The annual dinners were not just formal gatherings; they were celebrations of our hard work and dedication. I remember the laughter, the shared stories, and the sense of belonging that filled the room as members from various engineering disciplines came together.

The brainstorming sessions were another highlight. I recall the energy in the room as ideas flowed freely, with everyone contributing their unique perspectives. It was inspiring to see how collaborative efforts could lead to innovative solutions for the challenges we faced in the engineering field.

Participating in the IEM Jog A Round was a refreshing break from our busy schedules. It was not just about fitness; it was about fostering a healthy lifestyle among members while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. The sense of community was palpable as we cheered each other on, creating lasting friendships.

I also cherish the moments spent at the various venues, like the Palace of the Golden Horses and the PJ Hilton. Each location had its own charm and contributed to the overall experience of our events. The stunning backdrops and excellent hospitality made our gatherings even more special.

Reflecting on these memories, I am grateful for the opportunities I had to grow both personally and professionally during my time with IEM. The experiences shaped my career and left me with a treasure trove of fond memories that I will carry with me forever.

IEM Jog A Round
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa]
Kuala Lumpur
26 March 2000

A jogging event was held for IEM members at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa on 26 March 2000. Running or jogging is one of the best cardio exercises you can do. Running at least 10 minutes a day can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Runners lower their chances of dying from heart disease by half.

Taman Tasik Titiwangsa is one of Kuala Lumpur's most iconic and well-loved urban parks, serving as a "green lung" for the city. Located in the northeast fringe of Kuala Lumpur city centre. It was declared open on February 1, 1980.
Titiwangsa is the name of the main mountain range (Banjaran Titiwangsa) that forms the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, and the name was chosen to reflect the greenery and natural scenery.

GEOSYNTHETIC ASIA 2000 CONFERENCE (GA 2000)
PALACE OF THE GOLDEN HORSES
SERI KEMBANGAN, SELANGOR
29-31 MAY 2000
The Geosynthetic Asia 2000 Conference was held at The Palace of the Golden Horses Hotel at Seri Kembangan, Selangor, to explore the appropriate use and beneficial impact of geosynthetics on civil infrastructure and sustainability through Asia.
The conference was part of the series of Asian regional conferences on geosynthetics. One of the papers presented at the event was titled "Failure of A Reinforced Soil Wall on Piles" by Gue, S. S. & Chen, C. S., confirming the event's occurrence and the involvement of local geotechnical engineers.

Overall, Geosynthetic Asia 2000 was more than just a conference; it was a celebration of innovation and a commitment to advancing the engineering profession through collaboration and knowledge sharing. The impact of this event continues to resonate within the industry, shaping the future of geosynthetic applications in civil engineering.

The Palace of the Golden Horses is a majestic 5-star hotel often referred to as "Asia's Most Extraordinary Hotel". Opened in 1998, the hotel entered the new millennium as one of Asia's most prominent luxury landmarks.
The hotel is located in Mines Wellness City in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, about 15 minutes south of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
The hotel is situated on a 150-acre man-made lake, which was formerly the site of the Hong Fatt Mine, once the largest open-cast tin mine in the world. The area was transformed into Mines Resort City (now Mines Wellness City) for tourism and recreation.

This used to be the Mint Hotel. I stayed at the Mint Hotel in the year 2000, located along the KL-Seremban Highway, close to the Mines Exhibition Centre and the Selangor Turf Club racecourse.
The hotel ceased operations in February 2005 due to financial difficulties and a defaulted loan. It was later auctioned and acquired by property tycoon Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew. The hotel underwent a major refurbishment and rebranding programme and is now known as the Nouvelle Hotel.

I checked in Google Maps that Hotel Mint has already closed its operations; I'm not sure what year.

In the year 2000, my experiences with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) were truly unforgettable. Each event was a unique opportunity to connect with fellow engineers, share knowledge, and foster a sense of community.

One of the standout moments was the IEM Jog A Round at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as members gathered to promote fitness and well-being. It wasn't just about running; it was about camaraderie and support, as we cheered each other on, creating bonds that extended beyond the event itself.

The Staff Appreciation Lunch at the PJ Hilton Hotel was another highlight. It was a moment to reflect on our collective achievements and celebrate the hard work that went into organizing various events. The warm ambiance of the hotel, combined with the laughter and shared stories, made it a memorable gathering.

The IEM 41st Annual Dinner at the Renaissance Hotel was a grand affair. Engineers from all over the country came together to strengthen ties and celebrate our profession. The elegant setting, delicious food, and engaging conversations created an atmosphere of joy and unity.

Additionally, the Geosynthetic Asia 2000 Conference at the Palace of the Golden Horses was a significant event that showcased innovation in civil engineering. The exchange of ideas and insights during the conference was inspiring, highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing our field.

Reflecting on these memories, I am grateful for the friendships formed and the professional growth experienced during that year. Each event contributed to a rich tapestry of experiences that shaped my journey within the engineering community.
