SITE VISIT
SMART TUNNELLING
SG. BESI, KUALA LUMPUR
9 MARCH 2006
The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART Tunnel) is a stormwater drainage and road structure in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and a major national project in the country. It is the longest stormwater drainage tunnel in Southeast Asia and the second longest in Asia.
Construction of the tunnel began on 25 November 2003 and began operations at the end of January 2007.
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia had organised the site visit to the SMART Tunnel at Sungai Besi on 9 March 2006 and Kg Pandan on 11 May 2006.

This image shows the sheer scale of the construction, likely at one of the main shafts or the ingress/egress areas. The massive, deep cut into the rock highlights the significant excavation work required for the project.

The SMART Tunnel at Kampung Pandan was a remarkable engineering feat during its construction in 2006. This innovative project was designed to address the dual challenges of stormwater management and traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur.

As the longest stormwater drainage tunnel in Southeast Asia, the SMART Tunnel not only serves as a vital infrastructure component but also showcases advanced tunnelling techniques. The construction involved extensive excavation and the use of cutting-edge technology to ensure safety and efficiency.

Throughout the construction phase, the project faced numerous challenges, including geological complexities and the need to minimise disruption to the surrounding areas. However, the dedication of the engineers and workers involved ensured that the project progressed smoothly, ultimately leading to its successful completion and operational launch in 2007.

The SMART Tunnel stands as a testament to Malaysia's commitment to innovative engineering solutions, significantly improving urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

Dato' Ir. Ahmad Zaidee Laidin, Chairman of Gamuda Berhad. Gamuda was part of the Joint venture MMC-Gamuda that conceptualised and constructed the SMART Tunnel.
The tunnel's construction started in January 2003, and it was officially opened in 2007, placing this site visit squarely in the middle of the major construction phase.

The main gate of Pudu Prison has been preserved and forms part of a public park on the grounds of the Bukit Bintang City Centre.

Pudu Prison officially ceased operations in 1996 due to several factors. Built by the British Government between 1891 and 1895, it stood on Jalan Shaw (now Jalan Hang Tuah). It served as a prison until 2007.

Pudu Prison was said to be very haunted, as the prisoners that were hung there are still haunting the place and very much active and still living the life's of the prisoner even in the afterlife.

** The Pudu Prison was largely demolished by December 2012 to make way for urban development. It was never declared a National Heritage Site.
