My brother attended our Sekolah Tinggi Setapak, ( formerly Setapak High School or very much earlier High Street School), Old Boys gathering recently. He sent me this photo of one of our Teachers asking whether I still recognise this particular Teacher whom he met.
Of course I wrote, Mr Chew Yew Kai , a very dedicated Teacher responsible for the formation of our school ' Pioneering Society' a kind of a Belia Pelupor, or more like a Cadet Corp aimed at building good team spirit, motivational and adventurous team.
Unfortunately I didn't joined them as I was more interested in other school clubs activities , sports and games.
However, me and many of us do remember the achievements of his Cadets that put our school on Malaysia's map and records.
We were the first school to reach Mount Tahan, the first to scale Mount Kinabalu and the first to retrace the infamous ' Penarikan Route' which is a
series of portage routes across the Malay Peninsula. The most famous of these routes connected the Muar River with the Pahang River. The Penarikan shortened the journey of water vessels sailing between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea.( Source Wikipedia). A few months after our school success , the Malaysian Army Commando unit did the same.
Here's one exemplary Teacher, who despite all odds, rallied the confidence and trust of the school board to proceed with his dream. And it came true.
He is 90 years old as my brother informed me and to make it more interesting and sweet, he is currently residing in Rasah Kemayan Seremban, very close to our Seremban 2.
I called another friend who happened to be one of his Cadet , told him this good news , and we are excited to meet him.
SALUTE YOU MR CHEW AND OTHERS TOO WHERE EVER THEY ARE.
Ajelan to Teachers with love.
