THE LEGENDS: CIK SITI WAN KEMBANG

Cik Siti Wan Kembang was a legendary warrior queen who ruled over a region on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, specifically in the state of Kelantan. Her reign is generally cited as occurring in the 17th century (approx. 1610–1667), though some folk accounts place her as early as the 14th century.

She is a central figure in Kelantanese folklore and is celebrated for her beauty, wisdom, and military prowess.

Key Historical & Legendary Facts
  • Warrior Queen: She was known to be a skilled archer and horse rider. Legend says she led an army of female warriors into battle on horseback.
  • The Kijang (Barking Deer): According to folklore, the queen had a favorite pet kijang. This animal became so closely associated with her that it was inscribed on the gold coins (Kijang coins) of the era. To this day, the state emblem of Kelantan features two deer as a tribute to her.
  • Royal Lineage: She was the daughter of Raja Ahmad and Cik Banun. Her father died when she was only four years old, and she eventually ascended the throne at age 30 after the death of the regent, Raja Hussein.
  • Puteri Saadong: Cik Siti Wan Kembang never married. She adopted Puteri Saadong, the princess of the ruler of Jembal, who would later succeed her and become another legendary figure in Kelantan's history.
  • Mystical Departure: Local legend suggests that she did not die in the traditional sense but "disappeared" into the mystical world at Gunung Chinta Wangsa.
Cultural Legacy
She remains a symbol of female empowerment and independence in Malaysian history. Her name is still used today for various institutions and cultural references in Kelantan, serving as a reminder of a period when the state was a prosperous center for trade and governance under a powerful female ruler.
