MY TRAVEL INFO: VICTORIA PEAK, HONG KONG

Victoria Peak also known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak, is the tallest hill on Hong Kong Island.
This image from 1990 captures a classic perspective of Victoria Peak, the highest point on Hong Kong Island and its most iconic landmark.
At this specific moment in history, the Peak was undergoing a major transition from a colonial-era retreat into the world-class tourist and shopping destination it is today.

The Peak in 1990: A Snapshot in Time
  • The "Old" Peak Tower: In 1990, the Peak Tower was still in its original "wok-style" design (the first generation tower, built in 1972). This building featured the Tower Restaurant and a viewing deck that was much smaller than the current Sky Terrace 428.
  • The Skyline: Looking down from the Peak in 1990, the skyline was dominated by the then-brand-new Bank of China Tower (completed in 1989/90). The Central Plaza (with its pyramid top) wouldn't be finished until 1992, and the massive IFC towers were still over a decade away.
  • The Peak Tram: The tram you would have taken in 1990 was the 5th generation (the burgundy-colored cars), which had just been introduced in September 1989.
Key Landmarks at the Peak
If you were standing there in 1990, you likely saw:
  • The Peak Lookout: Formerly the Old Peak Cafe, this Grade II historic building still stands today, looking much as it did then with its charming stone walls and English cottage style.
  • Mount Austin Road: Leading up to Victoria Peak Garden, where the Governor’s Summer Lodge once stood.
  • Lion’s Pavilion: The popular Chinese-style gazebo where most tourists took their photos of the harbor.
