MY TRAVEL INFO: SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE AND OPERA HOUSE


The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are two of Australia's most iconic landmarks, located prominently on the edge of Sydney Harbour. They are major tourist attractions offering various ways to be experienced.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
  • Located at Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia, on the eastern side of Circular Quay and adjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden.
  • Opened - 20 October 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II
  • Architect: Jern Utzon - Danish architech who won an international competition in 1957.
  • Construction : took 14 years (1959-1973)
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007
SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE
  • Spans Sydney Harbour, connecting the central business district (Dawes Point in The Rocks area) to the North Shore (Milsons Point). 
  • The pedestrian walkway access on the southern side is near Cumberland Street in The Rocks.
  • Opened : 19 March 1932
  • Engineer: Dr.John Bradfield (inspired by New York' Hell Gate Bridge)
  • Construction: took 8 years (1924-1932), involving 1,400 workers
  • Structure: the largest steel arch bride in the world. Weighs 53,000 tonnes.
Visiting and Experiences
  • Walking/Cycling: A pedestrian walkway is available on the eastern side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, offering stunning views of the harbour and the Opera House. A dedicated cycleway is on the western side. Walking across the bridge is free.
  • BridgeClimb: For a unique, adventurous experience, you can book a guided climb to the very top of the bridge's arch for breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape and harbour.
  • Pylon Lookout: The south-eastern pylon contains a museum and a 360° lookout at the top, offering another fantastic vantage point of the harbour and city for an admission fee.
  • Opera House Tours: The Sydney Opera House offers daily guided architectural tours in several languages, providing behind-the-scenes access to its history, architecture, and various performance venues.
  • Performances: As a working performing arts centre, you can attend various shows, including opera, ballet, theatre, and concerts. Check their official website for schedules and tickets.
  • Harbour Cruises: Ferries and various boat tours (e.g., Sydney Harbour Boat Tours, Sea Sydney Harbour) run frequently from Circular Quay, offering excellent on-water views and photo opportunities of both landmarks.
Getting There
Both landmarks are easily accessible via public transport to Circular Quay, which is a central hub for ferries, trains, and buses.
  • To the Opera House: It is a short walk (6-10 minutes) from Circular Quay station and ferry wharves.
  • To the Harbour Bridge (southern access): It is a short walk from Circular Quay or Wynyard train stations to the pedestrian entry stairs near Cumberland Street in The Rocks.
