MY TRAVEL INFO: AN EVENING IN PARIS

EIFFEL TOWER
The Eiffel Tower (La Tour Eiffel) is more that just a landmark, it is a global icon of French culture and a masterpiece of the 19th-century engineering. Located on the Champ de Mars at 5 Avenue Anatole France. It is known as "Iron Lady", it was built to celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Designed by Guctave Eiffel with engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier and was built in 1887 - 1889.
It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for 41 years until the Chrysler Building was finished in 1930.

Paris reminds us of songs and movies that were broadcast a long time ago.
  • "An Evening in Paris" and "From Paris with Love" refer to two very different musical works, one a 1960s Bollywood classic and the other a modern jazz piece:
  • An Evening in Paris (1967): This is the title track of the iconic Hindi film starring Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore. Sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi, the song is famous for its upbeat tempo and lyrics that begin with "Aji aisa mauka phir kahan milega". It was composed by the duo Shankar–Jaikishan. You can listen to the full album on YouTube.
  • From Paris with Love (2020): This is a single by American jazz artist Melody Gardot from her album Sunset in the Blue. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, it features a "global orchestra" of musicians who contributed their parts remotely. It is a soft, melodic track with themes of longing and romantic nostalgia. You can find it on Spotify.
  • From Paris with Love" is also a 2010 action movie starring John Travolta, though its soundtrack consists of various artists rather than a single title song.
ARC DE TRIOMPHE
One of France's most powerful symbols of national identity and military history. It was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte after his great victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Napoleon promised his soldiers, "You will return home through arches of triumpt". He commissioned the arch in 1806.
Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame has been rekindled every evening since 1923 to honor those lost in World War I.
The arch was designed by Jean Chalgrin in a Neoclassical style, inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus but on much larger scale. Four massive sculptural groups decorate the pillars. The most famous is The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 (also known as La Marseillaise by Francois Rude. The inner walls are engraved with the names of 660 military leaders and 158 battles. Underlined names indicated those who died in combat.

REMEMBERING CHARLIE HEBDO ATTACK 2015
7 January 2015, a mass shooting took place at the offices of French Satirical Weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which was known for its controversial cartoons, including depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. The event lasted 3 days and claimed 17 lives in total.
Flowers and other tributes to commemorate the victims were primarily placed at 3 significant locations in Paris following the attacks such as outside the former Charlie Hebdo offices at the corner of Rue Nicolas-Appert in the 11th arrondissement, Place de la Republique, the large public square and The Hypercacher Supermarket, the site of the second attack in Porte de Vincennes to honor 4 victims killed there on 9 January 2015.

Paris attracts millions of visitors with its iconic landmarks, world-class art, exquisite cuisine, and romantic ambiance. Audrey Hepburn famously said, "Paris is always a good idea," a sentiment echoed by many who fall in love with the city's unique charm and energy.
