KHADIJAH SIDEK - THE FIRST HEAD OF KAUM IBU UMNO MALAYSIA

Khadijah Sidek was born on 15 Disember 1918 in Pariman, Sumatra Barat Indonesia. She received her education at a Dutch school (Hollands Inlandsche School). In 1933, she got 1st place out of 500 students in the School Examination and got a government grant. In 1936, she was appointed headmaster of Landschap school in Langkat Government, East Sumatra and passed the final examination. She was later selected to attend the Japanese High School (Jokyu Sihan Gakoo) Training and was assigned to teach at Nipon Indonesia School.
Khadijah Sidek became the president of HIMWIM (Himpunan Wanita Indonesia Malaya) in 1947 in Singapore. In 1948, she met her future spouse Dr. Hamzah Bin Hj Taib in Johor. When she was 3 months pregnant, she was arrested and jailed for 2 years in Singapore on charges of trying to overthrow the British government. She gave birth to the first child in the prison.
After serving a prison sentence without a trial, she was sentenced to be exiled for 10 years in Johor Bharu and was not allowed to enter Singapore.
Khadijah Sidek is the first woman to have been elected as the head of Kaum Ibu UMNO Malaya. Prior to this, this position was by appointment by UMNO President. In November 1956, she was dismissed from the party. The motivation for the dismissal because she was challenging the patriarchal tradition and hegemony within the parent party. Following her expulsion from UMNO, she joined the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), becoming the leader of its women's section, the Dewan Muslimat.
