2006: PUDU PRISON FROM BERJAYA TIMES SQUARE

The photo taken from my Room at 38th Floor (Room 38-04) shows Penjara Pudu in its full star-shaped layout. From that room I would see straight down Jalan Pudu to the prison, the Jalan Hang Tuah wall, and the big green field that was behind it.

Pudu Prison built by the British between 1891 and 1895, it operated for over 100 years. It closed as a prison in 1996, was used by police until 2008, and was demolished in 2010 - 2012 to make way for wath is now Bukit Bintang City Centre (LaLaport BBCC). Only the main gate and a small stretch of the famous mural wall are kept.

The wall that I captured along Jalan Pudu was once the longest mural in the world, painted by inmates. It was torn down starting 21 June for road widening.

Berjaya Times Square located at Jalan Imbi, Bukit Bintang right at the Pudu-Imbi junction where I took the Pudu Prison shot from. It's linked directly to the Mall.

Opened in September 2003, this 5-star hotel under Berjaya Hotels & Resorts, is two 48-storey towers plus a 15-storey podium with Malaysia's largest indoor theme park.

The X-shaped Pudu Prison with the big parade field behind it and Jalan Pudu in front. Right is LaLaport BBCC built on that same footprint after the prison was demolished in 2010-2012.

A shot in my hotel room the same day and a group photo for the 11th Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics (ACFM) held at the hotel from 22-25 May 2006. I was a secretariat with the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia.

ACFM is the major biennial forum for Fluid Mechanics in Asia, The First ACFM was organised in Bangalore, India in 1980.

Organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), it covered theoretical, experimental and computational fluid mechanics.

Because it was just 17 months after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, a lot of the 206 papers were on Tsunami hydrodynamics.
