Sandokan is well-known due to books and films. The Italien author Emilio Salgari wrote a novel with Sandokan as hero in 1883/84 in a newspaper of Verona - in 1901 his story became the book "Le Tigri di Mompracem" (= "The Tiger of Mompracem"). Altogether Salgari has written eleven books on the "Pirati della Malesia" and Sandokan. These novels reached mass circulation and were translated in a lot of languages. No wonder, that other media also turned to Sandokan: There are a lot of comics and films on Sandokan. The TV production with Kabir Bedi in the leading part made Sandokan once again known.
Indeed Emilio Salgari can be considered as "father" of Sandokan, but this figur is by no means virtual. Salgari's Sandokan is a Malay freedom-fighter who lived in Borneo/Sabah in the middle of the 19th century and fought against the British. I have discovered that Sandokan really has lived in that place and at that time. This page is devoted to my discovery and the historical Sandokan. Furthermore, I present the Sandokan-films known to me. The Sandokan-novels you can find under "Emilio Salgari".
How I discovered the real Sandokan
Between 1992 and 2003 I travelled ten times to Malaysia and to other Southeast Asian countries - in the search for Sandokan, because I didn't want to believe the statment found in Italian literature that Sandokan wasn't real, that he was only the product of fantasy of Emilio Salgari who wrote novels on him. Actually, in literature concerning Southeast Asian history I have read that there actually was a red flag showing the head of a tiger which is Sandokan's emblem in Salgari's novel, but in history that flag was the flag of Syarif Osman of Marudu. Mompracem, Sandokan's island in the novels, existed on old maps, too. So, why shouldn't there have been existed Sandokan himself?
In 1993, when I visited the old fortress grounds in Marudu together with my Kota Marudu - friends, I asked directly for Sandokan. A relative of my friends, a teacher, told me, that Sandokan has fought together with Syarif Osman against the British on 19th August, 1845. The strong Marudu of Syarif Osman's time ceased to exist on that day. Marudu is also mentioned in Salgari's novels - as country of origin from Sandokan.
I asked in other places in Sabah/Malaysia and got further statements on the historical Sandokan. I visited his descendants in Sandakan and they gave me their family tree showing "Sandukung" as an granduncle of the famous Pengiran Sammah. In fact, I found other information in an article of Bhar who shows also the relation between "Sindukung" and Sammah. Then, Bampfylde, a British official in Sabah, wrote in 1883 on "Sandukur" as forefather of Sammah. "Sandukur" is the name given by the local people of that district. I also found the name "Sandokan" - in Kota Marudu district. In Salgari's first novel, the name appears as well different: as "Sandekao", but only one time. In the same novel, Salgari called him then always "Sandokan". The variations of the name is not disturbing in Southeast Asian regions. The dark vowls can change, the naming differs depending on the regions, and also the British authors may not have given us always correct versions. The main version from that name in Sabah is "Sandukung/Sandokong".
So I wrote an article on the historical Sandokan which was published in German (1995), in Italian (1996) and in English (1998). Another article was published in Italia in 2005. Furthermore, I published a book: "Marudu 1845", but that work mainly deals with the history of Syarif Osman, a contemporary and friend of Sandokan. Syarif Osman has been falsely accused by the British of being a pirate. On that ground, the British could destroy Marudu, a thriving state which was too dangerous to the British and especially to James Brooke who had already become the "White Rajah of Sarawak" in that time. You can read further information under "Syarif Osman" (menu).
