WHAT IS ISLAM & WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MUSLIM.

RESOURCE : HIDAYAH CENTRE

Islam is the fastest growing religoin in the world. Indeed, one out of every 5 persons on this earth is a Muslim.

Islam means the active submission to the one God. It is strictly a monotheistic religion and its restricts worship to the one supreme Lord who is the Originator and Creator of the universe.

Peace (the root from which the word Islam is derived) is attained through complete obedience to the commandments of God, for God is the source of all peace.

Muslims are those who believe in one God and in Muhammad as the final Prophet of God. They devote their lives to the service of God, the Creative and Sustainer of the universe. In addition to testifying the oneness of God and accepting Muhammad as the Seal of Prophets. Muslims perform the daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, practice alms giving, and perform pilgrimage to Mecca at least one in a lifetime

Islam teaches that God (ALLAH) is the source of all creations and that human beings are the best of His creation. He communicates by inspiring them  towards goodness and by sending Prophets who deliver God's message.

Islam is not new religion. Islam is there since man set foot on the earth. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is not the founder of Islam, but is the last and final messenger of Islam. The first Prophet was Adam followed by a long chain of Prophets to guide humanity.

The Qur'an, is the word of God revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It mentions many other  Prophets like Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Moses, Jacob, Joseph and Jesus. All the Prophets brought the same message i.e. belief in one God, upright human conduct and belief in the accountability of human acts at he end of time.

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. "
(Quran 5:3).

Mahatma Gandhi on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) :
"... I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed away over the hearts of millions of mankind..... I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life....."

"In the name of ALLAH, the ost Gracious, the Most Merciful..."

"Say: He is Allah, the One and Only!
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute:
He begeteth not nor is He begotten...
And there is none like unto Him...."
(Quran 112: 1-4).

ALLAH (God) is the all powerful and all-knowing creator, sustainer, ordainer and judge of the universe. Allah is the most gracious, and all-merciful.

Allah is beyond our sight and understanding, yet at the same time "nearer to us than our jugular vein..." (Quran 50: 16)

Muslims pray directly to Allah, with no intermediary, and seek guidance from Him alone, because "Allah knows well the secrets of your hearts" (Quran 5:7).

QURAN
Qur'an is the divine scripture revealed by Allah to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Arabic word "Qur'an" means "The Recitations". It is a collection of the revelations that Muhammad (pbuh) received.

According to its own message, the Qur'an does not establish a new religion. Instead it confirms and clarifies the truth of the original monotheism of Abraham, the focus of the Torah and Gospels.

"This is the (True) Book wherein is no doubt, a guidance to the pious ones.
Who believe in the Unseen and keep up prayer and spend (in charity) of what We have provided them.
An who believe in what has been revealed to you (Muhammad), and what has been sent down (to other apostles) before you: and of the Hereafter they are certain.
They are on (true) guidance from thei Lord: and they are the ones who are the successful."
(Quran 2:2-5).

MUHAMMAD (Peach be Upon Him)
"Surely, a Messenger has come unto you from among yourselves: grievous to him is that you should fall into trouble:he is ardently desirous of your welfare: and to the believers he is compassionate, merciful."
(Qur'an 9:128)

The Prophet was born in Mecca in AUgust 570 AD. He was given the name Muhammad, which means, the praised one. When the Prophet was over thirty years of age, love of God began to possess him more and more. Revolting against the polytheism and the many vices of the people of Mecca, he chose regularly to meditate in a cave two or three miles away. When he was forty years of age he received his first revelation. In these, the first verses of the Qur'an.

He was commanded to proclaim the name of One God. Who has made man and sowed the seed of His own love and that of fellow man in his nature: and it was foretold that the world would be taught all kind of knowledge through the pen. These verses constitute an epitome of the Qur'an (Qur'an 96: 2-6)
  • He is the Final Messenger (Quran 33:40)
  • A perfect guide to be followed (Quran 7:158)
  • Brings people from the darkness (of ignorance) to the Light (of Islam) (Quran 65:11)
  • A Prophet whom Allah appointed with proven prophecies (Quran 30:1-6) (Quran 48:1) (Quran 48:27) (Quran 61:13)
  • Allah revealed the Noble Qur'an on his blessed heart (Quran 26: 192-197)
  • Teaches the Holy Qur'an and Wisdom and purifies people (Quran 62:2)
  • Most exemplary character (Quran 33:21) Quran 68:4)

"And We have sent thee not but as a mercy forall peoples."
(Quran 21:108)
