MY TRAVEL: AMPANG SELANGOR

AMPANG, SELANGOR
AUGUST 2015
Ampang was one of the earliest areas in the Klang Valley to be opened for tin mining. The name "Ampang" derives from the old spelling of the Malay word "empangan" (or "Ampangan"), meaning "dam". A road was built from Ampang to Kuala Lumpur, which is today Jalan Ampang.

Kolej PTPL Ampang now MSU College Ampang, located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur City, was the first MSU College to be developed. In 1998, MSU College was the first private college in Malaysia to receive accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for all five programmes offered at that time.

A health screening programme was conducted at PTPL Ampang College on 5 August 2015 and was attended by only 80 students.

IN MEMORY OF AMPANG PARK
I had a chance to capture its bittersweet final days, as in my photo, Ampang Park holds an enduring place in Malaysian history.
Opened on 15 March 1973, Ampang Park paved the way for modern retail culture in Malaysia, long before the existence of mega-malls like Pavilion, Mid Valley or Suria KLCC. The brainchild of Tan Sri Low Keng Huat and his brothers.
Ampang Park officially closed its doors on December 31, 2017, amidst deep nostalgic pushback from both long-time merchants and the public. It was completely demolished in 2018.
Today, the site lives on as the integrated Ampang Park MRT and LRT transit station hubs, serving thousands of commuters daily in the heart of the city's golden triangle.

Ampang has been familiar to me since my school days, and it holds a special place in my heart. The vibrant streets, the friendly faces, and the rich history of the area have shaped my experiences and memories.

Growing up, I often visited the local markets, where the aroma of traditional Malaysian dishes filled the air. The sense of community was palpable, with neighbours greeting each other warmly and sharing stories.

As I reflect on those days, I realise how much Ampang has evolved while still retaining its unique charm. The blend of modernity and tradition creates a fascinating tapestry that continues to attract both locals and tourists alike.

I cherish the moments spent exploring the hidden gems of Ampang, from quaint cafes to cultural landmarks. Each visit reminds me of the importance of community and the memories we create in the places we call home.
