TRAVEL INFO: SAMILA BEACH, SONGKHLA (2002)

Reminiscing about a trip to Hat Yai and Songkhla from 2002. That period was a classic time for travel in Southern Thailand, long before the major modern developments but when the core charm of the region was already well-established.

The image I shared here is a beautiful shot of the Golden Mermaid (Nang Nguek Thong) statue on Samila Beach in Songkhla.

In 2002, this was the "must-see" landmark of the province. Here are a few details about it that you might remember from your visit:
  • The Legend: The statue is inspired by an epic saga called Phra Aphai Mani written by the famous Thai poet Sunthorn Phu. It tells of a mermaid who sat on the beach combing her hair with a golden comb until a young fisherman startled her. She fled into the sea, leaving her comb behind, and though he waited every day, she never returned.
  • The Sculpture: It was created in 1966 by Jitr Buabus. It has since become a symbol of good luck—locals and tourists often touch the statue, which is why parts of the bronze are often more polished and shiny than others..
Popular Memories from 2002

Visited both Hat Yai and Songkhla during that trip in 2002, we likely experienced:
  • Khao Tang Kuan: Taking the lift (or walking the stairs) up the hill in Songkhla to get a panoramic view of the city and the lake.
  • Kim Yong Market: The bustling heart of Hat Yai, where travelers have for decades hunted for imported snacks, nuts, and clothing.
  • Wat Hat Yai Nai: Visiting the massive reclining Buddha, which remains one of the largest in the world.
  • The Seafood: Enjoying fresh catches at the restaurants along Samila Beach or the famous night food stalls in Hat Yai.

REGENCY HOTEL HATYAI
Staying at The Regency Hotel Hatyai in 2002 placed you right in the bustling heart of the city's commercial district. This landmark hotel, which first opened its doors in 1984, was a prime choice for travelers during that era due to its proximity to the city's most famous markets and attractions.
The Hotel is located on Prachatipat Road, just a fes steps away from the Kim Yong Market and the vibrant Lee Garden Night Market area.
In 2002, the hotel was a prominent 4-star establishment known for its spacious rooms and city views.
