MANUSIA PERTAMA BELAYAR MENGELILINGI DUNIA ADALAH ORANG MELAYU

**Enqique de Malacca atau Panglima Awang Hitem lelaki Melayu yang menjadi penterjemah dalam Kapal Trinidad milik Ferdinand Magellan yang didakwa berasal dari Melaka adalah orang pertama mengelilingi dunia. Pendapat ini berdasarkan sumber-sumber primer yang terdapat di luar negara.

Antara sumber sejarah yang dapat membuktikan kewujudan Enrique sebagai manusia yang benar-benar wujud ialah laporan dalam bentuk diari pengembara sezaman tentang pelayaran Magellan yang dikenali sebagai Prima Viaggio Intorna al Mondo (First Voyage around the world). Penulisnya, Antonio Pigafetta adalah antara anak kapal yang turut terlibat sama mengikuti pelayaran tersebut secara sukarela yang bertindak sebagai jurutulis.

Pigafette (1969: 67) mencatatkan:

"On Thursday morning twenty-eight March, because during the night we had a fire on an island ahead, we came to anchor near the said island, where we saw a small boat which they call Boloto, with eight men in it, which came near to the captain-general's ship. Then a slave of his, who was of Zamatra, formerly called Taproban spoke to those men of a distance, and they heard him speak and came alongside the ship, but drew off quickly and would not come onboard because they mistrusted us. Then the Captain, seeing their mistrust, showed them a red cap and other things, which he caused to be tied and fastened on a small plank. Which those on the boat took forthwith and gladly, and then returned to inform their king. Two hours of wo later, we saw approaching two long boats which they call Ballanghai, full of men,and in the larger was their king seated below an awning made of mats. And, when they came near the captain's ship, the said slave spoke to that king, who understood him well. For, in that country, the king knows more languages that the common people do. Then the king order some of his men to go to the captain's ship (telling them) he would not stir from his boat rather close to us. Which he did, and when his men returned to his boat he immediately departed. "

Catatan Pigafetta ini memperlihatkan peranan Enrique sebagai seorang jurubahasa memandangkan penguasaan bahasa Sepanyolnya yang lancar selain Bahasa Melayu, iaitu bahasa ibundanya., Selain itu, Enrique juga digambarkan menjadi utusan Magellan untuk berhubung dengan peribumi tempatan bagi mendapatkan bekalan makanan.

Satu lagi rekod yang membuktikan kewujudan Enrique ialah Surat Wasiat Magellan bertarikh 24 Ogos 1519 yang ditulis ketika armada Maluku berlabuh di muara Sungai Guadalquivir di San Lucar de Barrameda, Sepanyol bagi menantikan tiup angin yang sesuai untuk memulakan pelayaran. Dalam surat wasiat ini, Magellan memberi pengakuan bahawa Enrique adalah hamba tawanannya yang berasal dari bandar Melaka dan ketika itu berumur sekitar 26 tahun.

Magellan menuntuk pembebasan Enrique dari belenggu perhambaan dan diberikan wang pampasan belanja sara hidup sebanyak 10,000 maravedis sekiranya berlaku kematian ke atasnya semasa pelayaran apabila menjelaskan:

"And by this my present will and testament, I declare and ordain as free and quit of every obligation of captivity, subjection, and slavery, my cpatured slave Enrique, mulatto, native of the city of Malacca, of the age of twenty-six years more or less, that from the day of my death thence forward forever the said Enrique may be free and manumitted, and quit, exempt, and relieved of every obligation of slavery and subjection, and that he may act as he desires and think fit; and I desire that of my estate there may be given to the said Enrique the sum of ten thousand maravedis in money for his support; and this manumission I grant because he is a Christian, and that he may pray to God for my soul..:

Satu lagi dokumen yang dapat membuktikan kewujudan Enrique ialah daftar senarai anak-anak kapal dalam armada tersebut. Nama Enrique tersenarai dalam kapal Trinidad yang menjadi kapal utama Armada Maluku dan dinakhodai sendiri oleh Magellan. Walaupun seorang hamba, Enrique didaftarkan sebagai seorang jurubahasa / penterjemah yang dibayar gaji sebanyak 1500 maravedis sebulan. Jumlah ini melebihi bayaran yang diperuntukkan kepada pelaut mahir., pelaut perintis dan juga kelasi biasa. Keadaan ini menunjukkan kepentingan dan kedudukan Enrique sebagai jurubahasa dan penterjemah bagi ekspedisi ini terutama apabila berada di Timur nanti.
