Papua New Guinea belongs to the AUSTRONESIAN space, On this September 16, wish a happy anniversary of independence (September 16, 1975) to PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Papua New Guinea, in long form the independent state of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea over an area of 462,840 km2 (the other half, Western New Guinea, being under Indonesian sovereignty). It is located in nearby Oceania, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, north of Australia, and west of the Solomon Islands.
The name of the country comes from “papou”, a word which, according to the naturalist Alfred Wallace, comes from the Malay puwah-puwah or papuwah which means “frizzy”2. The French ethnologist Christian Pelras, a specialist in the south of the island of Celebes, writes that maps drawn up in the 18th century by the Bugis mention the name “Papua” to designate New Guinea3.
The first inhabitants, ancestors of the Papuans, settled in New Guinea and neighboring islands some 50,000 years ago. Some 3,500 years ago, Austronesian migrants reached eastern New Guinea and mixed with Papuan populations on the northern coast and in the Bismarck Islands.
In 1884, the north of present-day Papua New Guinea was annexed by the German colonial Empire, then the south was made a protectorate of the British Empire that same year. The territory passed entirely under British sovereignty after the First World War, and was entrusted to Australia. Papua New Guinea peacefully obtained its independence and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations on September 16, 1975.
